The BBQ is Over by Hillary Newman
According to the Los Angeles Times, the FDA has approved methods for selling genetically engineered fish and meat. Author Jill Adams explains, “The [FDA] has decided to categorize genetically engineered farm animals, also called transgenic animals, as an animal drug...and will be held to the same requirements already existing for conventionally bred animals treated with hormones or antibiotics.”
Let’s take a look at how these animals are genetically engineered. Adams writes, “an extra piece of genetic material (DNA) is inserted into the animal’s genome at the earliest stages of development. Sometimes the method Continue reading...

OpinioNation
This is the official month of being kinder to Mother Earth, and even though it’s something that should be part of our daily lives, Earth Day is a great time to focus, assess, and pledge to redouble our efforts. So, we want to know: Will you be doing something special to celebrate Earth Day?
a.) Yes! Although I try to be green year round, I will be celebrating by attending an event or participating in a special project.
b.) No. Earth Day is just a marketing tactic designed to ease the conscience of people who feel guilty for driving Hummers.
and see the results in the next issue of Greenzine!
Last issue’s opinion poll: The President’s recent call for cap-and-trade legislation has everyone in Congress in a tizzy- including some democrats who claim that because this legislation could have such far-reaching affects, at least 13 different subcommittees will need to discuss it before action can be taken. What do you think?
76% - The planet is warming as we speak- cap-and-trade needs to be put into action now.
24% - Haste makes waste. Let the committees hash it out for another year or so.

Recycled Light Has Never Been So Beautiful by Hillary Newman
Ladies and gentleman, I give you Heath Nash. South African native, Heath Nash, uses recycled plastic bottles along with other “rubbish” to produce his creative light fixtures, sculptures, chairs, tables, walls, and the list goes on. At the University of Cape Town, Nash studied sculpture. After completing University, Nash began his career sculpting and selling...well, trash. In 2006, Nash was named Elle Decoration South African Designer of the Year. Later, Nash was appointed SA Creative Entrepreneur of the Year by the British Council. While his designs range in color, shape, size, and function, they all share a common modern, beautiful vibe.
Keep a lookout for Mr. Nash.

living the green life: tips and facts for total sustainability
Energy Vampires by Beth Buczynski
The simplest way to cut your carbon footprint is to stop wasting energy on appliances that are only used for minutes a day. Small household appliances can be just as guilty as power-hungry electronics of pumping out the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide when not in use. Simply unplugging items such as an electric shaver or automatic coffee maker can save 135 pounds of carbon a year. But don’t stop there. Go on a hunt around your home and office for energy-wasting appliances and unplug them.

Skin So Salty by Beth Buczynski
We’ve lived in fear of damp, smelly armpits ever since the onset of puberty, and sometimes we even carry it around with us just in case unexpected physical activity causes an underarm emergency. But how often have you stopped and thought about how your speed stick really works?
Antiperspirants contain fragrance, but they also contain chemical compounds that block the pores to stop the discharge of perspiration.¹ This would be great except that sweating is also a way for the body to release toxins- and if they're blocked by antiperspirant chemicals, they just sit there under your skin. Also, aluminum chloride, the most popular chemical compound used in antiperspirants, has unfortunately been shown to have detrimental effects on animals in laboratory testing.
Deodorant allows the release of perspiration, but prevents odor by combating it with antiseptic agents, which kill odor-causing bacteria. Again, does dousing your skin with antiseptic agents sound appealing? Also, scientific research has shown the parabens present in deodorant have been linked to breast cancer in some cases.
This leaves us with an interesting choice—be the first to start a European trend in your community (you know what I mean) or find a healthier alternative. According to my adventurous friend, the solution is salt.
Salt crystal that is. This simple alternative works on the basic principle that salt absorbs water. In most cases the sticks are made of a pure salt crystal, but some brands contain a variety of mineral compounds. All are free of perfumes, chemicals, dyes or parabens.
Simply wet the stick and rub under your arm after your shower to deposit a layer of natural salts that will help to absorb perspiration throughout the day. Now, there won’t be any comforting Tropical Rain scent, and you might notice some sweat or odor for a week or so while your body cleanses itself of the toxins and chemicals you’ve been blocking, but it won’t stain your clothes or slowly poison you, and you can even try them on other areas of your body with sweat/odor issues, like feet!
